We Found the Attendees of Breadstick Ricky's 'Dip Camp' and They Are Not Okay: A Testimonial Reunion

We Found the Attendees of Breadstick Ricky's 'Dip Camp' and They Are Not Okay: A Testimonial Reunion

There are wellness retreats, and then there is whatever happened at Hollow Pines Lodge the second weekend of last month.

The event was called Dip Camp. The brochure promised "a transformational journey through trust, texture, and tomato-based immersion." The price was $999 per attendee, non-refundable, a fact that would later become the emotional centerpiece of the entire weekend. What follows is a reconstruction of the event, assembled from seventeen written testimonials we recovered from a laminated binder left in the lodge's lost-and-found, next to a single left shoe and a jar of unclaimed giardiniera.

Arrival: The Marinara Welcome Pool

Check-in began at 4 p.m. sharp, which is also when the first red flag was allegedly raised. Attendees were asked to remove their shoes and "reconnect with the crumb."

Testimonial #3, attendee Sandra W., accounting professional, Columbus: "The welcome drink was warm chicken broth with a breadstick sticking out of it like a straw. When I asked for a regular straw, The Boss made eye contact with me for eleven seconds and said, 'The breadstick IS the straw.' I drank from the breadstick. I don't want to talk about it."

Testimonial #7, attendee Marcus D., dental hygienist, Dayton: "Honestly? Ten out of ten. Nobody tells you how good warm broth is. I think about it daily."

The Dipping Sauce Meditation Hour

Friday evening featured a guided meditation led by Breadstick Ricky himself, who — per his online breadstick university diploma, which he brought and displayed on an easel — is technically certified in "applied crumb philosophy."

Participants were instructed to close their eyes, hold a single breadstick, and "become the vehicle, not the destination."

Testimonial #11, attendee Priya R., project manager, Chicago: "At first it was relaxing. Then Ricky started whispering 'the garlic butter knows what you did' and nobody laughed, so I couldn't tell if it was part of the program. I checked the itinerary. It was not part of the program."

Testimonial #2, attendee anonymous, listed only as 'Greg from Toledo': "I came in skeptical. I left with a new personal philosophy and a mild garlic intolerance. Worth it."

Sunrise Breadstick Foraging: A Crime Scene in Spirit

Saturday's centerpiece activity required attendees to wake at 5:30 a.m. and hunt for breadsticks that Breadstick Ricky had hidden throughout the surrounding woods the night before. The brochure described this as "reconnecting with where breadsticks come from." They come from an oven, for the record. They do not come from under a rotting log.

Testimonial #5, attendee Dana K., high school teacher, Akron: "I found one inside a hollow tree and I screamed, because in the early light, for one second, I thought it was alive. It was not alive. It was stale. Everything at Dip Camp was stale, including the jokes, and I loved every minute, and my therapist says that's not the flex I think it is."

Testimonial #9, attendee Chuck M., retired, Mansfield: "Ricky hid 40 breadsticks. We found 11. He says the other 29 are 'part of the woods now.' The park ranger who showed up did not find this funny."

The Trust Falls Over Marinara

Yes. Over marinara. A kiddie pool filled with approximately 30 gallons of restaurant-grade marinara sauce was set up on the lodge's back deck, and attendees took turns falling backward into the waiting arms of strangers and, occasionally, into the sauce itself.

Testimonial #14, attendee Yolanda B., ICU nurse, Canton: "The trust falls were fine. The problem was that falling into the pool was called 'earning your sauce' and NOT falling into the pool was also called 'earning your sauce.' There was no way to not earn sauce. I have marinara in a duffel bag I can't explain to my family."

Testimonial #1, attendee Derek F., sales, Youngstown: "I did not attend Dip Camp. I'm Greg's brother. Greg has been talking about 'the vehicle, not the destination' at every family dinner for three weeks. Please make it stop."

The Closing Ceremony: The Refund Policy, Read Aloud

Sunday's farewell event is where the testimonials shift in tone from confused to haunted. At sunset, all attendees gathered in the lodge's great room, where The Boss stood at a podium, produced a single laminated page, and read the Dip Camp refund policy aloud in its entirety. It is 40 minutes long. There were no refunds. The policy exists to explain why.

Testimonial #4, attendee Sandra W. again: "He read it with feeling. Like a wedding toast. At one point he paused for dramatic effect before the section about 'acts of garlic.' People cried. I don't know if it was grief or the onions from the foraging trail."

Testimonial #8, attendee Marcus D., final submission: "I have already registered for next year. My wife has not. My wife is the one writing this part. Please do not let him register again. He has the marinara duffel bag in the trunk."

Our Official Verdict

We graded Dip Camp on our standard four-axis rubric: Breadstick Quality (B+, Costco run, but warm), Emotional Aftermath (F, in a beautiful way), Legality (pending), and Likelihood We Return (Ricky says 100%, The Boss says 'the woods are not done with them').

Dip Camp will return next fall, per a flyer stapled to a tree at Hollow Pines that the park ranger has asked us to stop writing about. Registration is open. The price is now $1,199. The breadstick straw is included.

We'll see you there. Bring a change of clothes and a duffel bag you're willing to lose.
